About Our Area - Forest of Dean and Wye Valley

Bluebell woods; Cone Pill; Wild horses, May Hill

The Forest of Dean, nestled between the rivers Wye and Severn is an enchanting and unspoilt area. The Forest covers 27,000 acres, 22,000 acres are covered with an estimated 20 million trees! All year round this beautiful and natural environment offers delightful drives and walks along forested valleys, streams and ferny banks. Come when the snowdrops abound, followed by daffodils and bluebells, come when all the trees are in full glory, come in the autumn the riot of colour is stunning.

The Foresters still have ancient and traditional privileges granted to them. The right to graze their sheep - often seen along the roads and in villages. The rights of pannage - for pigs to feed from the acorns when they fall from the oaks, along with freemining in deep coal seams and quarrying are still to be found. Making a distinct come-back are the small groups of wild boar often spotted in the deep forest. Forest cottages made from the distinctive pink Forest Stone seem to appear haphazardly up in the hills or down by the fast flowing streams. Remains of old mines can still be found and village pubs abound. Try the local cider down on the Severn, along with welcoming B and Bs and camping facilities.

There are magical attractions - The Dean Heritage Museum deep in Soudley Valley, Taurus Crafts Centre, a \"village\" of arts and crafts, workshops and yummy food. St. Briavels Castle, Birds of Prey at Symonds Yat on the River Wye, the Clearwell Caves, The Sculpture Trail walk through the heart of the Forest and great places to eat fresh caught salmon along the Severn at Newnham on Severn are just a few.

From the mighty Oak Forest that Nelson once came to select his timber for fighting ships to the gentle and peaceful deer hiding in the trees, the Queen of the Forests is a magical place to explore. Artists and Makers have long been inspired to create here and you are most welcome to \"meet the makers\" by contacting our artists direct.
