Andrew James is an experienced wood turner and an excellent craftsman. He likes working with green wood, bringing into life the form within, with all it's twists and turns. He also especially enjoys working with spalted ash and beech, he says that "the imperfections are part of the natural beauty of the wood". Living in Monmouth he likes to use locally sourced timber from the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. Andrew makes functional pieces that have decorative detail and are essentially tactile. His pieces invite you to hold and feel the grains or smoothness. With the pieces made from fruit woods there is also sometimes an added bonus of a lovely perfume. His wide range includes pieces with richly interesting grains, bowls, goblets, platters, pens, lamp bases and vessels. His exhibition at The Nelson Museum Monmouth recently was very popular. Andrew's large woodturned platters are sought after, hitting a contemporary note in any setting. His workshop is crammed with wonderful items that would make the perfect gift or perhaps a commemorative piece. At present he is making items including lamp bases from yew - extremely sought after. Other pieces come from such sources as fallen oak as in common with most woodsmen he is an enthusiastic forager and "green" minded. Visits welcome by arrangement.
