Avril is one of the leading macro crystalline glaze potters. Avril shows all year round Internationally and has just returned from a prestigious conference/workshop focusing on macro crystalline techniques in U.S.A. Avril was recently at the Bovey Tracey Contemporary Crafts Fair. She was recently Artist in Residence at The Nature in Art Museum and shows at various top events throughout the year. Living and working in the beautiful Soudley Valley, Forest of Dean, she works in ceramics, porcelain and raku. Avril is inspired by the simple graceful shapes of Song dynasty Chinese porcelains. The specialised crystalline glazes on her exquisite porcelain bowls and bottles also echo many natural and botanical themes such as the soft lichen on the stones and trees in the Forest. Her exquisite pieces are thrown Limoge porcelain, fired to between 1260 and 1280 Celsius in an electric top loader. Always particularly interested in glaze technology, she has experimented in the field of creating unusual glazed surfaces within the constraints of electric kiln firing. The subject of Avrils’ current work is her own exploration into the beguiling and frustrating discipline of Macro Crystalline glazes. Whatever the medium, it is very important to her that her work is well finished, tactile, visually appealing and for each piece to be completely unique. Avril is a member of The South Wales Potters.
