Chris makes unique earthenware pieces called "Mocha ware". This name was coined in the 18th century by potters who discovered that the application of a mixture of tobacco and iron ore to wet clay produced a tree like pattern, not unlike the veins in "Mocha Marble". Chris has successfully recreated this technique on her range of mugs, plates and jugs - creating her very own "forest landscapes". Because of the natural reactions of the materials to each other, no two pieces will be the same. Chris runs 1 day courses - so if you want to try your hand at making a special mocha ware piece, have it fired and glazed, contact Chris. Beginners most welcome! Vistors are welcome -'phone first.
The iron ore or ochre Chris uses is mined locally here in The Forest of Dean which still has an active and ancient iron- ore mine. The ore is extracted by hand and its' colour varies from yellow to red through to purple and black.
