THE DEAN HERITAGE MUSEUM - Set in mellow historical buildings by a stream and mill, deep in the valley near Soudley Ponds. It's the museum to visit for an inspiring, fun, historical, cultural and creative introduction to the ancient Forest of Dean. Disabled access. Lift. Coaches welcome by arrangement. The "Museum of the forest" has 5 galleries telling the story of the Dean from pre-history to present day. It’s a story scattered with ancient remains & fossils from mammoth and rhinoceros to Romans. Discover ancient iron works, coal mines and stone quarries, Norman & English Kings hunting wild boar and deer, the historic and unique order of Freeminers, Shipbuilding & Salmon fishing on the River Severn, Nelson selecting Oak for battle ships, industrial expansion and invention. See and hear about the lives of ordinary people -“telling their story”- often in the distinctive Forest dialect. Enjoy exploring the grounds, millpond and waterwheel,“Harveys Folly” Freemine, hurdle- maze and the Gloucestershire Old Spot Pigs. Join in the ancient skill of charcoal burning and traditional skills courses such as pole lathe turning. Tranquil walks by lakes and through picturesque woodland -lovely to see the changing colours of Autumn and in Spring at Bluebell time.
