THE DEAN HERITAGE CENTRE - Visit the Forest of Dean's Museum for an inspiring, historical, cultural introduction to the ancient Forest.

There's plenty to see, a story of Romans through to the Normans and English Royalty. Learn about Nelsons fighting ships made from Forest timbers. The Museum and Centre is set in old Mill buildings by a stream, near Soudley Ponds nearest town Cinderford. The interior of the museum is contemporary and has a range of exhibits and historic relics over two floors. See the Old Foresters Cottage exactly as it would have been in the 1890s. Visit the Old Spot Piggies and also the vintage rural artifacts carriages carts etc. Wood Carving and chainsaw artist Clayton Ryder has work on show. Family Workshops throughout the year. Coaches and educational tours welcome by arrangement. Good Cafe, home made cakes, freshly cooked local food. Excellent shop selling maps books gifts etc. Outside seating on the balcony overlooking lake. Adventure playground. BBQ area. Disabled access & lift.

Visit the chainsaw /wood carver & sculptor,demonstrations, shop, books, maps, gifts, research archives,(containing some of Dennis Potter's work) adventure playground, Old Spot Pigs, Old Forester's Cottage, The Forest "Dame School" and the model working coal mine. Childrens workshops and events all year. The Dean Heritage Centre offers an historic journey. Discover charcoal burning, iron works, leather tanning along the streams, prehistoric fossils, coal mines and stone quarries, Norman & English Kings hunting wild boar and deer, the ancient and unique order of Freeminers, Shipbuilding & Salmon/Elver fishing on the River Severn, Nelson selecting his Oak for battle ships, industrial expansion and invention. See and hear about the lives of ordinary people -“telling their story”- often in the distinctive Forest dialect.The Dean Heritage is in the beautiful Forest of Dean. Enjoy exploring the grounds, woods millpond and waterwheel.
