THE DEAN HERITAGE MUSEUM - Set in mellow historical buildings by a stream, deep in the valley near Soudley Ponds. It's the museum to visit for an inspiring, fun, historical, cultural and creative introduction to the ancient Forest of Dean. Coming up - August 27th. Outdoor Theatre by the Lake, BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS. Hilarious play by DENNIS POTTER. War time childhood in the Forest memories. See our Events page. Talk on DOWSING 30th August at 2pm. Coaches welcome by arrangement. Disabled access. Lift. A range of exhibits and historic relics/artifacts over two floors, tell the story of the Dean from pre-history to present day. It’s a story of Romans through to the Normans and English Royalty. Discover ancient iron works, the leather tanning along the streams, prehistoric fossils, coal mines and stone quarries, Norman & English Kings hunting wild boar and deer, the historic and unique order of Freeminers, Shipbuilding & Salmon fishing on the River Severn, Nelson selecting his Oak for battle ships, industrial expansion and invention. See and hear about the lives of ordinary people -“telling their story”- often in the distinctive Forest dialect. Enjoy exploring the grounds, millpond and waterwheel, Join in the ancient skill of charcoal burning and traditional skills courses such as pole lathe turning. Tranquil walks by lakes and through picturesque woodland -lovely to see the changing colours of Autumn and in Spring at Bluebell time.
