Gloucester Cathedral is a 1300 year old treasure trove of Art & Crafts, a vaunted example of English Cathedral design. Finely carved stonework and sculptures, ancient and contemporary stained glass, ancient tombs and the fascinating crypt, famous Cloisters with monks lavatoreum are well worth visiting. On until March 31st an exhibition celebrating the life of Edward Wilson. Exquisite watercolours and drawings of the Antarctic. Dr Wilson traveled with Captain Scott on 17th January 1912. see our Events page. The painted Arts and Crafts Chapel of St Andrew by Thomas Gambier Parry(1866-8).Over the centuries people have always found much to admire in the Cathedral's magnificent architectural styles, from Norman to the Perpendicular. The earliest examples of fan vaulting is a stunning sight. There are daily tours and excellent Guides to take you up the Tower, visit the Gold and silver filled Treasury chamber. Also talks i.e. Arts & Crafts, Stained Glass windows, The Life of Medievil Monks and the Music Tours. There's a full calendar of musical and choral events, the free Organ recitals are a must. The highly successful contemporary sculpture event "Crucible" was staged within and outside the Cathedral in September 2010. Selected images from "Crucible" appear on this page. Gloucester Cathedral employs 7 stone masons overseen by highly respected mason Pascal Mychalysin. They carry out major structural and decorative restoration work recently completing two large scale Gargoyles. There's a varied Schools/ Colleges programme organised by The Cathedral Education Centre Educational. There are exhibitions, events and musical performances throughout the year.
