Richard Straley is a well respected and constantly developing Painter, specialising in semi-abstract watercolours of the natural landscape. His main career was as a professional lecturer in the arts, he taught at Gloucester College. He will be showing at The 3 Choirs Festival in Hereford July 2012 in The Medieval Great Hall Bishops Palace.
His water colours of the natural landscape are characterised by semi-abstract imagery and a rich, vibrant use of colour and texture. He sometimes experiments with pigments, gold and copper leaf and with mixtures of water. Currently Richards' new work, again concentrating intensely on exploration of ancient landscapes, involves new techniques of painting. He is producing prints that are digitally manipulated from his paintings. Richard uses loose colour washes on A1 heavily textured paper; sometimes he mixes in pure pigments and severely distresses the painted surface. To enhance the texture he uses masking fluid, emulsion paint, wax, ink, dyes and drawn and incised lines. Occasionally he adds a varnish to the paint or surface to deepen the image and bring out the subtleties of colour. Richard says he is "moved by landscapes that evidence man's passing, abandoned settlements, lines, scrapings, circles, pathways, ploughing & tilling. The sense that what we see is part of a continuing cycle without end nor beginning". He brings together a complex tangle of ideas and feelings gathered from the landscapes he studies. light".
