Valerie studied at Exeter and gained a degree in Zoology. Always fascinated by her studies of plant and animal life, she drew from an early age. Valerie works with graphite, coloured pencil and mixed media. She says " The portrait of an animal, fur, feather and some plant textures can benefit from this medium. She belongs to the esteemed Gloucestershire Society for Botanical Illustration. Her portraits can take many days of intense and detailed work. Plant studies are normally made from Nature, she uses photographic reference when absolutely necessary. Her work is anatomically accurate and sensitively rendered. Valerie is the Organiser for The Gloucestershire Botanical Illustration Classes at Shurdington near Cheltenham. Please call her to enquire about forthcoming classes. Her botanical illustrations could certainly be used for accurate identification for classification, particularly for herbal and medicinal purposes. For her paintings of animals in particular, Valerie feels that the finished portrait should absolutely represent the essential character of the clients' pet and not "just a generalised picture of the species or breed". Do call her to discuss.
